Boston police work tough jobs and long hours, day in and day out. The "thin blue line" is in effect for everything — big events, neighborhood patrols and of course emergency calls.

But what happens when those who serve and protect end up crossing the line, causing more damage than good?

Ed Mason and Tom Mashberg spent a year looking into how the Boston Police Department handles police misconduct, what's done with repeat offenders, and how much money is spent to settle the department's problem cases.

Ed Mason joined Emily Rooney to talk about the research.
