Providence Mayor Taveras on the State of his City
Times have been as tough for many cities and towns as they have been for many of us during the long and winding economic downturn here in the US. Case in point, Providence. Rhode Island’s Capital City was, at one point, facing a 110 million dollar deficit that Mayor Angel Taveras called a “category 5 fiscal hurricane.” But in a recent address on the state of his city, Tevaras had a more upbeat assessment, averring that "Providence is recovering."
Perhaps. But the challenges facing Taveras and city officials remain daunting. And the mayor himself has admitted that the worst-case scenario is still the b-word itself: bankruptcy. Taveras joined us today on Boston Public Radio to explain what Providence needs to do to avoid that doomsday scenario and turn recovery into growth.
