Le Beaujolais Nouveau Est Arrivé! Wines to Try on Beaujolais Day
Jonathan Alsop, founder of the Boston Wine School, joined Callie Crossley on Boston Public Radio to talk Beaujolais wines for Beaujolais Day- a "secret" French holiday that marks the start of a the new French wine vintage.
Beaujolais is a light red grape that is fruity and dry, but not earthy, says Alsop. Here's some recommendations from his notebook:
- "There's Georges Duboeuf and then there's everybody else. King of Beaujolais, famous for making Nouveau famous."
- "Louis Jadot is a huge producer, more noble, less 'everyman' wine that Duboeuf represents."
- Chateau de Pizay
- Albert Bichot
- "Potel-Aviron, my personal favorite small producer of Beaujolais, tastes like a French Pinot Noir"
- "Chateau de la Chaize Brouilly, very rustic and rugged, a little wilder than usual for Beaujolais"
